Mixed cellulose ester (MCE) sterile membrane filters with a 0.45 µm pore size and 50 mm diameter are used for a variety of applications, including sterile filtration, analyzing particles and insoluble oils in water, and sampling aerosols in industrial hygiene. They are made of cellulose acetate and cellulose nitrate, which gives them a smoother and more uniform surface than pure nitrocellulose filters. The color contrast of the filter surface can also help with particle detection.
